Rapides Habitat
for Humanity's Ministry

Rapides Habitat for Humanity is a partnership between families and the community. Families who need safe, decent, affordable housing partner with caring people in the community to build and buy houses at cost (no profit) with a no-interest loan.

Rapides Habitat for Humanity's mission of helping to provide safe and clean homes to those in need in Central Louisiana does more than just put a roof over someone’s head. It has been proven that clean, decent, consistent housing provides stability for the entire family, especially children. It enables families to establish a sense of dignity and pride which expands their educational and employment prospects. Placing families in viable housing improves the families' overall health, as well as their physical safety and security. It's a win-win situation for the individual families as well as our community.

Good housing attracts economic investment and development in Rapides parish. Local school systems thrive as a result of people owning their own homes. Home ownership stimulates civic activism and community-based organizations to develop. An overall social stability and security increases when overall housing improves. It is obvious that adequate housing is vital to the health and economic well being of Central Louisiana.

Alexandria's City Council approved Grant for $130k for the Alexandria Community Development Department Home Ownership New Construction and Homebuyer Program

The Town Talk Article

On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, Alexandria's City Council approved six companion ordinances dealing with the city's new initiative on home ownership and home buyer assistance...

The program essentially will use federal stimulus money to allow the city to take over adjudicated properties and develop new homes to be purchased by low to moderate income families.

The city has identified 139 lots that have been adjudicated for at least five years, in hopes of acquiring 53 of them and donating them to the Alexandria Urban Renewal Association, a nonprofit entity which the council approved Tuesday night.

Thirty-three of those lots will have new homes built on them, with 20 lots going into a "land bank" for future development....

In addition, the council agreed to set aside $130,000 of the stimulus money for Habitat for Humanity for the construction of three to five homes...
