Rapides Habitat for Humanity is not a give-away program. Families approved for a "Habitat" house, work side-by-side with volunteers on their houses, as well as other Habitat projects. This "sweat equity" along with donations of time, material and money from the community keeps our self-help housing program alive. These non-profit houses are then sold to the partner family with no-interest mortgage payments. Rapides Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful program to help families get a start on building a promising life in a healthy environment.

The Rapides Habitat for Humanity was initiated in 1989 by Norman Martin who was urged on by JoAnne White. With their energy and determination, the first house was rehabilitated in January of 1990. Shortly afterwards, the first newly built house was begun in May of that year. We have been going strong for twenty years. Our projects add up to seventy houses throughout Rapides parish with three currently under construction. We are proud of the approximately 280 family members in Central Louisiana who once lived in questionable housing now live in safe, decent homes thanks to the efforts of the people, organizations and businesses of Central Louisiana.
We are working on
